THEATRE
Shakespeare's Richard III, directed by Michael Kahn
In Richard III, Shakespeare creates a self-proclaimed villain battling to obtain and retain the crown. A ruthless Machiavellian, Richard seduces and slaughters his enemies and relatives, becoming so tainted with blood that "sin will pluck on sin." Michael Kahn directs this gripping tragedy, one of Shakespeare's earliest and most enduring successes. Geraint Wyn Davies returns to play the dazzling title role. The Baltimore Sun praises Kahn for turning the Shakespeare Theatre Company "into the closest thing this country has to Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company." The production is part of the citywide celebration Shakespeare in Washington. There are four Canadians in this production: Geraint Wyn Davies who plays Richard III, Margot Dionne in the role of Queen Elizabeth, Donald Carrier who plays Earl Rivers and James Ricks in the role of the Second Murderer. Runtime: approximately 3 hours 10 minutes with one intermission.

STAGE PERFORMANCE
"For The Pleasure of Seeing Her Again", by Michel Tremblay
"For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again" is a hilarious and beautiful work from Canada's most widely produced playwright. As Michel Tremblay's most autobiographical work, this is a touching and funny tribute to his mother. Through a series of vignettes from childhood on, we discover that words are Nana's biggest gift to her son. He inherits a love of language and humour, discovers the truth that lies behind illusions, and comes to understand the power of imagination.

"You Are Here" by Daniel MacIvor
Set among the infidelities of movie directors, starlets and magazine writers, "A one woman show with twelve characters" is how playwright Daniel MacIvor describes this OBIE Award winning drama. One of Canada's most respected theater artists, MacIvor has written a soul-bearing story of a woman's attempt to share with the audience the connections between who she was and what she has become. But once her tale begins, the characters involved begin appearing even when she does not want them to as she loses control — and the story of her life begins to tell itself.

Norwegian Immigrant Soldiers in the American Civil War
Did you know that more than 6.000 Norwegian immigrants fought in the American Civil War? Norwegian historian Karl Jakob Skarstein presents the background on the Norwegian Immigrant Soldiers at the Smithsonian, Mon., Nov. 7, 6.30 pm. It is little known that more than 6,000 Norwegian immigrants fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Some 1,000 were killed in battle or died of disease in wretched hospitals, but because most of their letters and diaries were written in Norwegian, their story remained unheard until now. Norwegian historian Karl Jakob Skarstein is writing a book based on their stories. In this lecture, he describes the soldiers’ background and their reasons for joining Lincoln’s army. Providing fascinating glimpses of their experiences on the front, Skarstein tells of the Norwegian 15th Wisconsin Infantry, which fought desperately against hopeless odds at Stones River and Chickamauga. He also relates the dramatic tales of Norwegians who fought at Chancellorsville, at Gettysburg, and in Sherman’s southern campaign.

ART EXHIBIT
November Art Exhibition
This month, seven artists converge and form a diverse show, incorporating photographs, ceramics, and paintings. Dae-Seung Seo, photographer, snaps portrait images with private possessions, capturing a personal feeling towards the subject. Jenna Klimchak uses bold colored lines and space to accentuate the simple, everyday objects in her mixed media. Jae Hong Joo paints figure portraits and still life, using distinct lines and minimal color. This creates a unified piece that lacks the modern appeal. SunHee Oh’s images focus on the elements of contrasts and complements of photography and paintings. Don Hung Chung is an international ceramist, whose pieces integrate the theme of bilateral relationship – between the divided North and South Korea or between a man and a woman. Minseok Kwan’s ceramics emphasizes the structure of lines, which the artist describes as mirroring human situations. Saeng Youl Park creates functional ware which evokes different interpretation from his audiences. Exhibit opening 11/10/2005.

Ceramics of Uzbekistan
The art of ceramics in Rishtan emerged and flourished in one of the most picturesque oasis of Uzbekistan - Ferghana Valley. The history of its emergence, described in numerous legends, is still to be discovered by archeologists. The people of Rishtan have introduced colorful and unique features in the art of burnt clay that existed since time immemorial. And their works can be clearly distinguished from anything that has been created in this field not only by other peoples but also by masters from other Uzbekistan centres of ceramics...
