THEATRE
Shakespeare's Richard III, directed by Michael Kahn
In Richard III, Shakespeare creates a self-proclaimed villain battling to obtain and retain the crown. A ruthless Machiavellian, Richard seduces and slaughters his enemies and relatives, becoming so tainted with blood that "sin will pluck on sin." Michael Kahn directs this gripping tragedy, one of Shakespeare's earliest and most enduring successes. Geraint Wyn Davies returns to play the dazzling title role. The Baltimore Sun praises Kahn for turning the Shakespeare Theatre Company "into the closest thing this country has to Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company." The production is part of the citywide celebration Shakespeare in Washington. There are four Canadians in this production: Geraint Wyn Davies who plays Richard III, Margot Dionne in the role of Queen Elizabeth, Donald Carrier who plays Earl Rivers and James Ricks in the role of the Second Murderer. Runtime: approximately 3 hours 10 minutes with one intermission.

PHOTO EXHIBITION
Emil Mayer: An Intimate Master of Photography
Emil Mayer, born 1871, was a Viennese lawyer and photographer whose photographs of everyday life and street scenes of Vienna around 1910 are milestones in the history of photography. Delicacy, subtlety and poetry characterize his pictorial language. He committed suicide in 1938 when the Nazis seized power in Austria and much of his work was destroyed. However, in recent years the great mastery and significance of Emil Mayer has been rediscovered, giving him his due place among the greatest photographers of the last century.

Cardiff has developed a 20-minute multi-sensory audio walk artwork in which the artist's layered sound effects merge to evoke a blending of history and memory. FILM
Dutch Visions, The Films of Jos de Putter and Peter Delpeut
Renowned Dutch filmmakers Jos de Putter and Peter Delpeut have had relatively little exposure in the United States, yet their words are among the most intelligent and well-crafted currently in production anywhere. Both filmmakers show the effect of Holland's rich documentary legacy- one that claims such commanding figures as Joris Ivens, Bert Haanstra, Johan van der Keuken, and Heddy Honigman. Yet, Jos de Putter and Peter Delpeut also borrow from aesthetic traditions ranging from the lyrical, to the allegorical, to the abstract. Both filmmakers will be present to discuss their work- Jos de Putter will introduce The Damned and The Sacred on Sept. 18, and Peter Delpeut will introduce Treasures of the Rijksmuseum and Cinema Perdu on September 25.
