THEATRE
Shakespeare's Richard III, directed by Michael Kahn
In Richard III, Shakespeare creates a self-proclaimed villain battling to obtain and retain the crown. A ruthless Machiavellian, Richard seduces and slaughters his enemies and relatives, becoming so tainted with blood that "sin will pluck on sin." Michael Kahn directs this gripping tragedy, one of Shakespeare's earliest and most enduring successes. Geraint Wyn Davies returns to play the dazzling title role. The Baltimore Sun praises Kahn for turning the Shakespeare Theatre Company "into the closest thing this country has to Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company." The production is part of the citywide celebration Shakespeare in Washington. There are four Canadians in this production: Geraint Wyn Davies who plays Richard III, Margot Dionne in the role of Queen Elizabeth, Donald Carrier who plays Earl Rivers and James Ricks in the role of the Second Murderer. Runtime: approximately 3 hours 10 minutes with one intermission.

Zimova's Photography / Berkat Association Presentation
Photographer Iva Zimova created the traveling exhibition "To Live to See a Better Day" for the Berkat Civic Association to help viewers overcome prejudice and societal myths about women in three Islamic regions: Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Iraq. In addition to the exhibition, the Embassy will be screening the film Terror in Moscow. This astonishing documentary tells the inside story of what really happened in those terrible days and hours in the besieged theatre in Moscow, Russia. At the time, very little was known about the perpetrators of the Moscow Siege - including the identities of the Black Widows, the masked Chechen women clad in black robes who guarded the hostages, each carrying a 2kg bomb-belt, a grenade and a pistol. The program reveals that most of them were educated, westernized women whose men folk had been killed by the Russians. The evening culminates with the Berkat Association's presentation and discussion on the theme for the evening: Terror, Security, Sovereignty and Building Bridges between People, joined by Jana Hradilkova from the Czech Berkat Association.
